Accra-based radio station Onua FM, a subsidiary of Media General Ghana Limited, has officially issued an unreserved apology and a full retraction to the Minister for Foreign Affairs, Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa. The media house has also formally distanced itself from damaging remarks made on its platform by Benjamin Gyewu-Appiah, a prominent communicator for the New Patriotic Party (NPP).
The media network's public retraction follows a high-profile defamation lawsuit filed by Minister Ablakwa at the High Court in Accra. The suit named both the NPP communicator popularly known as "Benghazi" and Media General Ghana Limited as co-defendants following a contentious broadcast aired in October.
The legal controversy stems from wildcard allegations made by Gyewu-Appiah during a live morning show discussion on Onua FM. During the broadcast, the political commentator made severe claims alleging financial impropriety against the Minister regarding state funds meant for the evacuation of Ghanaian citizens from South Africa, while additionally bringing personal allegations involving musician Fantana into the matter.
Moving swiftly to mitigate legal exposure following the court action, Onua FM broadcast a clarification emphasizing that Gyewu-Appiah’s commentary reflected his personal opinions and did not align with the station's editorial standards. While Media General’s formal apology aims to resolve its standing in the suit, Gyewu-Appiah has yet to issue a public response regarding the legal proceedings.
