Capacity-Building Workshop Launched for Volta Region Traditional Councils

2 min read

The Ministry of Local Government, Chieftaincy and Religious Affairs has officially launched a capacity-building programme designed to strengthen chieftaincy administration across the Volta Region. Targeted at members of newly inaugurated Traditional Councils, the initiative seeks to equip traditional leaders with essential administrative skills and governance tools. The workshop reflects the government’s ongoing effort to modernize traditional governance while honoring the vital role Chiefs and Queen Mothers play in community development and national cohesion.

Held in Ho, the regional capital, the training covered key operational areas including administrative management, dispute resolution mechanisms, committee management, and sustainable community development planning. Facilitators highlighted the importance of standardizing record-keeping and formalizing council procedures, enabling traditional authorities to effectively manage chieftaincy affairs, handle land and chieftaincy petitions, and lead local developmental drives within their respective jurisdictions.

During the sessions, Ministry officials urged participants to strictly uphold the law, act with fairness, and proactively preserve peace within their traditional areas. Peace and stability were emphasized as indispensable foundation blocks for economic growth and social progress, with traditional leaders called upon to use alternative dispute resolution techniques to address conflicts constructively before they escalate.

To maximize the impact of local governance, the Ministry also encouraged the Traditional Councils to forge strong partnerships with Metropolitan, Municipal, and District Assemblies (MMDAs) alongside other key development stakeholders. By harmonizing traditional authority with local government frameworks, traditional leaders are better positioned to advocate for infrastructure, promote education, and lead transformative progress for their citizens.
