Her Excellency Naana Jane Opoku-Agyemang

Vice President Prof. Naana Jane Opoku-Agyemang joined the leadership and staff of Cenpower Generation Limited to celebrate a decade of successful commercial operations at its flagship 375-megawatt Kpone Thermal Power Plant. Marking ten years as a cornerstone of the nation’s power grid, the milestone highlighted the plant’s crucial role in providing stable, multi-fuel energy to roughly one million households across the country. During the ceremony, the Vice President commended Cenpower for demonstrating how Ghanaian enterprise, technical expertise, and strategic international partnerships can successfully finance and deliver major infrastructure projects.

In her address, Prof. Opoku-Agyemang placed a strong emphasis on sustainability, urging Cenpower to deepen its commitment to environmental protection and community welfare. She specifically lauded the company's local corporate social responsibility projects, such as addressing plastic pollution along Sega Beach and spearheading waste management and biodiversity conservation education at the Paul Methodist School. The Vice President stressed that as thermal power continues to balance Ghana's energy mix, energy producers must proactively minimize their environmental footprint and align operational practices with sustainable development goals.

The celebration also provided a platform to discuss structural reforms and resilience within the broader national energy framework. Highlighting recent government initiatives aimed at stabilizing energy sector finances, the occasion coincided with the announcement of an amended Power Purchase Agreement (PPA) with Cenpower. This revised agreement secured a $66 million debt relief on outstanding arrears, showcasing a joint effort between the state and independent power producers to improve long-term financial sustainability while keeping power reliable and accessible.

Concluding her remarks, Vice President Opoku-Agyemang reaffirmed the government's drive to expand industrialization and execute its 24-Hour Economy agenda, noting that both depend heavily on a robust, eco-friendly, and cost-effective power supply. She encouraged Cenpower and other independent power producers to keep innovating, maintaining high operational standards, and championing green initiatives to power Ghana's socio-economic growth for decades to come.
