AMA Orders Traders to Vacate Unauthorized Bus Stops Within 48 Hours

2 min read

The Accra Metropolitan Assembly (AMA) has issued a strict 48-hour ultimatum to traders operating at unauthorized bus stops across the metropolis, demanding they immediately vacate these public spaces. The directive comes ahead of an intensified enforcement operation designed to reclaim rights-of-way, restore order to transit nodes, and safeguard public safety. Municipal officials emphasized that failure to comply will result in swift removal actions and legal sanctions for recalcitrant vendors.

The rapid spread of roadside vending at bus stops has severely disrupted transport operations and suburban traffic flow across Accra. Traded goods, makeshift stalls, and heavy pedestrian congestion at transit points frequently force buses to unload passengers directly on active roadways. By reclaiming these critical zones, the AMA aims to alleviate traffic bottlenecks, streamline public transportation, and significantly reduce the risk of pedestrian accidents along busy corridors.

City authorities reiterated that public safety and urban mobility must take precedence over illegal trading activities. While acknowledging the economic factors driving informal street vending, officials stressed that unauthorized structures at bus stops violate municipal bye-laws and undermine urban planning efforts. The assembly has urged traders to relocate to designated market centers across the city, where proper infrastructure and safer environments exist for commercial activities.

As the 48-hour deadline approaches, task forces comprising AMA security personnel and local enforcement agencies have been deployed to monitor compliance and prepare for full-scale enforcement. Business owners, commuters, and transport operators have been advised to cooperate with task force officers during the exercise. The metropolis wide operation signals a broader effort by the AMA to enforce civic discipline, enhance city sanitation, and build a safer, more orderly capital.
