Hon. James Gunu (Volta Regional Minister)

The Volta Regional Minister, Hon. James Gunu, has underscored that the ultimate success of the Ghana Medical Trust Fund (GMTF) relies heavily on rigorous public awareness, transparent governance, and robust coordination with healthcare providers. Speaking on the role of specialized healthcare financing in addressing critical medical needs across the country at the Stakeholder Engagement Forum hosted on 12th October 2026 (GLOBAL FM), the Regional Minister highlighted that while establishing the fund is a major milestone, its real-world impact will depend on how effectively its processes are managed and communicated to the citizenry.

Hon. James Gunu emphasized that public awareness is essential to ensuring that vulnerable Ghanaians, particularly those living in rural and underserved communities, know how and where to seek financial assistance for specialized medical treatments. He noted that without a deliberate, nationwide drive to inform citizens about the eligibility criteria and application procedures, many of the intended beneficiaries especially those suffering from high-cost, chronic conditions might remain unaware of the support available to them.

Beyond public outreach, the Regional Minister stressed the indispensability of transparent administration and accountable management to build public confidence and safeguard resource allocation. He noted that maintaining strict operational integrity, clear auditing standards, and open lines of communication will protect the trust fund’s reputation, encouraging local corporate entities, private donors, and international partners to continuously support the initiative.

Finally, Hon. Gunu pointed out that seamless collaboration between the trust fund administrators, medical institutions, and frontline health workers is key to delivering prompt relief to patients. He concluded by calling on regional health directorates, traditional leaders, and civil society organizations to act as proactive partners in bridging the gap between local communities and the Ghana Medical Trust Fund, ensuring no patient is left behind due to financial constraints.
