Ghana is taking a significant step toward expanding its global media footprint and boosting tourism through a proposed partnership with a US-based film and television fund. The initiative aims to leverage international film and television productions to showcase Ghana’s rich cultural heritage, develop local creative talent, and position the nation as a premier destination for global filmmaking and cultural tourism.
The collaboration was central to discussions during a high-level meeting in Accra between Ghana’s Minister for Tourism, Culture, and Creative Arts, Hon. Abla Dzifa Gomashie, and Akunna E. Cook, Founder and CEO of Next Narrative Africa and representative of the fund. Both parties explored strategies to attract foreign creative investments and leverage narrative storytelling to connect with international audiences, particularly the African diaspora.
Highlighting immediate opportunities, Ms. Cook revealed that two of the first nine projects financed by the fund are set in Ghana, with an additional upcoming production scheduled to shoot across both Ghana and Nigeria. She emphasized the fund’s commitment to collaborating with Ghanaian authorities to elevate local stories, spotlight scenic destinations, and build robust capacity within the country’s domestic film and creative infrastructure.
In a move to strengthen African creative leadership on the global stage, Ms. Cook invited Hon. Gomashie to participate in a panel of African creative economy ministers at the historic Apollo Theater in Harlem, New York. Hon. Gomashie welcomed the invite and pledged the Ministry’s full backing for the initiative, noting that international co-productions will preserve and promote Ghanaian cultural identity while generating dynamic economic returns.
The meeting underscored a shared vision for transforming Ghana’s creative sectors into key drivers of national revenue and job creation. Hon. Gomashie was accompanied by her Deputy Minister, Yussif Issaka Jajah, and the Director of Tourism, Dr. Geoffrey Deladem Tamakloe, demonstrating the Ministry's unified leadership toward executing this strategic cross-border venture.
