Alexander Afenyo-Markin, the Minority Leader in Parliament, has asserted that he will not back down from defending the New Patriotic Party (NPP), despite facing sharp criticism and personal attacks regarding his position on the financial losses linked to the Ghana Gold Board (GoldBod).
The controversy stems from an ongoing political clash between the Minority Leader and GoldBod CEO Sammy Gyamfi. At the center of the dispute are allegations that the state-owned gold trading firm registered losses totaling GH¢22 billion (approximately US$1.7 billion) during its 2025 financial year.
Speaking at the government's Accountability Series, Mr. Gyamfi dismissed the claims, accusing Mr. Afenyo-Markin of orchestrating a calculated smear campaign against GoldBod instead of promoting meaningful public oversight.
In a recent interview with Metro TV, Mr. Afenyo-Markin brushed off the pushback, emphasizing that public insults will not deter him from carrying out his parliamentary obligations as Minority Leader. He reaffirmed his commitment to pressing the issue forward regardless of the backlash.
"Even if I am targeted or left to stand alone, I will face the issue directly and see it through. This is for the benefit of the party, and I will ensure that the right outcome is achieved," he stated.
