Ghana’s Minister for the Interior, Muntaka Mubarak, has directed the Ghana Police Service to step up operations against vigilantism and stop the creation of illegal self-defence forces nationwide.
Speaking at the opening of the Regional Commanders’ Conference at the Police Headquarters in Accra, Mr. Mubarak highlighted that the growing trend of political parties, traditional leaders, organizations, and individuals setting up private security groups poses a major risk to national stability and public safety.
He called on law enforcement officers to maintain high vigilance and deal decisively with any actions that threaten public order.
Referencing the Vigilantism and Related Offences Act, 2019 (Act 999), the Minister reinforced that forming private security groups is strictly illegal under Ghanaian law. He emphasized that state-authorized security agencies are the only entities legally permitted to provide protection, instructing commanders to act swiftly to dismantle these unauthorized groups and hold offenders accountable.
