Ghana has intensified health monitoring across its border crossings, airports, and medical facilities following a resurgence of Ebola infections across parts of the continent.
The increased vigilance comes in response to a spike in Ebola cases and casualties in the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC), sparking concerns over potential international spread.
Health Minister Kwabena Mintah Akandoh confirmed that national surveillance networks are fully active to identify and manage any potential imported cases immediately. He highlighted that the ministry is collaborating closely with the Noguchi Memorial Institute for Medical Research, securing critical equipment and testing supplies to reinforce the country’s diagnostic and response infrastructure.
"We have implemented essential measures starting at our airports through to our primary surveillance units. Our systems are operational to block entry where possible, and we are fully equipped to manage and contain any cases should they arrive," Akandoh stated.
While emphasizing the goal of keeping the nation Ebola-free, the Minister reassured the public that border detection mechanisms are equipped to isolate suspected cases before local transmission can occur.
Additionally, Akandoh urged West African nations to foster stronger cross-border partnerships. He emphasized that regional security relies on continuous data sharing, joint technical expertise, and proactive resource allocation long before an outbreak reaches crisis levels.
