Incarcerated New Patriotic Party (NPP) member, Bernard Antwi Boasiako popularly known as Chairman Wontumi has officially picked up nomination forms to contest for the party's National Chairman position.
The news was confirmed by Ewuradwoa Coleman, the Communications Director for his campaign team.
"Yes, the campaign team has picked up the forms on Chairman Wontumi's behalf. We are moving forward with his race for National Chairman," she stated during an interview with JoyNews.
Chairman Wontumi is currently serving a 20-year prison sentence. An Accra High Court found him guilty of charges related to illegal mining at the Samreboi concession in the Western Region.
Justice Audrey Kocuvie-Tay convicted him of transferring mineral rights without approval from the minister and helping run unlicensed mining operations. His sentences are running at the same time, giving him an effective 20-year jail term.
Additionally, the court fined him GH¢120,000. If he fails to pay, he faces an extra three-year sentence, which would also run concurrently with his 20-year term.
His legal team has appealed the conviction and sentence, filing for bail while waiting for the court to hear the appeal.
Despite his prison sentence and legal challenges, his team is moving ahead with his campaign for the NPP top seat.
