Commuters across Ghana may soon pay more for public transport as the Ghana Private Road Transport Union (GPRTU) prepares to adjust fares in response to rising fuel costs.
The Union’s Deputy Public Relations Officer, Samuel Amoah, confirmed that internal discussions are underway, with an official announcement on the new rates expected before the end of the week. Fuel prices are projected to climb, with petrol likely rising above GH¢16 per litre and diesel expected to cross the GH¢19 per litre mark.
According to Mr. Amoah, these upcoming fuel increases leave the Union with little choice but to review transport charges. He noted that market checks confirmed the price hikes are imminent rather than mere speculation.
He added that discussions are already active, particularly around a proposed 30% fare increase currently submitted to the Ministry of Transport for review. With fuel costs climbing further, he signaled that an upward adjustment in transport fares is now almost certain.
