A group of Ghanaians currently stranded in South Africa is calling on the government to resume its voluntary evacuation scheme. Many say they are eager to come home after losing their jobs, businesses, and housing during recent xenophobic violence.
The request comes after official evacuation efforts wrapped up following the arrival of a final group of 41 citizens in Ghana on September 4. That flight brought the total number of repatriated Ghanaians to 1,964.
Despite the end of the program, those remaining in South Africa report that their living conditions continue to worsen and are asking for one more chance to return safely.
One of the affected citizens, Margaret Amenuvegbe, explained that she and several others signed up for the original exercise but hesitated to go through screening due to reports of overcrowding and poor shelter at the centers.
"We wanted to come. We were ready to come because they even chased us from where we were working and then where we were sleeping," Ms. Amenuvegbe shared during an interview on Citi FM on Monday, September 7, 2026.
She noted that her immediate group includes four adults and four children who urgently need to leave, adding that many other Ghanaian nationals across the country are facing similar hardship.
