The Member of Parliament for the Anlo Constituency, Hon. Richard Kwame Sefe, has urged youth and university graduates in his constituency to look beyond menial jobs and upskill themselves by taking specialized maritime courses. Speaking during a series of town hall meetings with local residents, the lawmaker emphasized that holding a traditional degree should not limit young people from seeking high-value, practical certifications that align with global economic demands and Ghana’s expanding blue economy.
Addressing attendees at the community engagement, Hon. Sefe expressed concern over the growing trend of tertiary graduates accepting low-paying, informal work out of frustration or lack of immediate opportunities. He noted that academic degrees, while commendable, often need to be complemented with industry-specific skills. According to the MP, specialized professional courses—particularly in the maritime and seafaring sectors—offer a direct pathway to lucrative international careers, sustainable livelihoods, and enhanced employability.
Highlighting the geographic advantage of the coastal Anlo area, the MP pointed out that youth in the region are uniquely positioned to leverage maritime training and secure employment within logistics, shipping, marine engineering, and offshore operations. He encouraged constituents to view maritime certifications not as a departure from their academic backgrounds, but as a strategic booster that distinguishes them in a highly competitive global job market.
Hon. Sefe reassured constituents of his continued commitment to youth development and capacity building across the Anlo Constituency. He promised to explore partnerships with relevant educational institutions and stakeholders to facilitate access to maritime training programs, ensuring that interested young men and women receive the guidance, sponsorship opportunities, and support required to enroll and succeed.
