The Ghana Grid Company Limited (GRIDCo) and the Electricity Company of Ghana (ECG) have jointly issued a press release informing the public of a temporary power supply interruption in parts of the Greater Accra Region caused by severe flooding from ongoing heavy rains.
According to the statement, flooding has affected critical electricity infrastructure, including the Mallam and Achimota Primary Substations, prompting a precautionary shutdown to safeguard lives, protect property, and prevent damage to the power network.
Safety First: Precautionary Measure
The companies explained that the decision to temporarily switch off power supply from the affected substations was necessary due to the risks posed to both electrical equipment and operational personnel.
“As a precautionary measure and in the interest of public safety, it has become necessary to temporarily shut down power supply from the affected facilities,” the release stated.
GRIDCo and ECG are continuously monitoring the situation and conducting detailed assessments of the impact on the transmission and distribution network. They noted that power supply may be interrupted in other affected areas as necessary while the heavy rains and flooding persist.
Public Safety Advisory
Residents are urged to exercise extreme caution and immediately report any electricity-related hazards, such as:
Fallen electricity poles
Exposed or fallen power lines
Flooded electrical installations
Reports can be made to the nearest ECG office or through ECG’s customer service channels. Prompt reporting will aid rapid response efforts and help ensure public safety.
Restoration Efforts and Apology
The two companies sincerely apologized for the inconvenience caused and expressed appreciation for the patience, cooperation, and understanding of affected customers.
“Every effort will be made to restore power supply as soon as weather conditions improve and it is safe to do so,” the statement added.
