Ghana’s Minister for Foreign Affairs, Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa, has stated firmly that the country will not support or tolerate any reprisal attacks against South African nationals living in Ghana, despite the ongoing xenophobic incidents affecting Ghanaians in South Africa.
His comments come in the wake of rising tensions and public outrage over the reported mistreatment of foreign nationals, including Ghanaians, in parts of South Africa.
Addressing the issue, Hon. Ablakwa emphasized that Ghana remains committed to upholding peace, diplomacy, and the rule of law. He noted that while the government shares in the frustrations and concerns of its citizens, it will not endorse retaliatory actions that could escalate tensions or endanger innocent lives.
According to him, responding to injustice with further violence would only undermine Ghana’s long-standing reputation as a peace-loving nation.
The Minister reiterated that Ghana’s approach will be guided by responsible diplomacy and constructive engagement with South African authorities. He assured that government will continue to demand adequate protection for Ghanaians abroad while pursuing solutions through appropriate international and diplomatic channels.
He further stressed that safeguarding lives and maintaining bilateral relations must take precedence over emotional reactions.
Hon. Ablakwa also called on Ghanaians at home and abroad to remain calm and law-abiding, urging them to avoid actions that could inflame the situation.
He assured South African nationals living in Ghana of their safety, noting that they will continue to enjoy full protection under Ghanaian law. The Minister concluded by reaffirming Ghana’s commitment to African unity, stressing that challenges such as xenophobia must be addressed collectively and peacefully.
