Foreign Affairs Minister Calls for Urgent Action on African Conflict Drivers at AU Summit

​Ghana’s Minister for Foreign Affairs and Member of Parliament for North Tongu, Hon. Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa, addressed the African Union Executive Council during an extraordinary session on Conflict Resolution and Prevention held in Angola on August 29, 2026.

​In his address, Hon. Ablakwa urged African governments to engage in candid self-reflection regarding the root causes of instability across the continent. He emphasized that conflict and violent extremism must no longer be treated as acceptable norms, warning that time is running out to build a stable and prosperous Africa.

​The Foreign Minister identified systemic injustice, youth unemployment, poverty, corruption, resource exploitation, political intolerance, and external proxy interference as the primary catalysts driving continental disputes. He called on leaders to confront these fundamental issues directly rather than treating merely their symptoms.

​Highlighting the critical link between regional security and economic opportunity, Hon. Ablakwa pointed to recent migration events including the thousands of young Africans attempting to cross into Ceuta, Spain as a clear sign of growing desperation. He urged African nations to shift financial resources away from armed conflicts and redirect them toward sustainable economic development and job creation for the continent's youth.
