Government Directs Probe Into Electricity Metering and Overbilling Concerns in Volta Region

The government has directed an independent investigation into persistent complaints regarding faulty electricity meters and overbilling across several communities in the Volta Region.

​The Public Utilities Regulatory Commission (PURC) and the Energy Commission will jointly lead the exercise following growing dissatisfaction among local consumers over inflated utility charges and defective metering equipment.

​Dr. John Abdulai Jinapor, the Minister for Energy and Green Transition, announced the directive on Friday, August 28, during the launch and sensitization event for the Turnkey Electrification Project in Ho. Addressing the gathering, he stressed that while consumers are expected to fulfill their civic duty by paying for electricity, they must only be billed for what they actually consume.

​Highlighting the need for transparency, Dr. Jinapor clarified that the Electricity Company of Ghana (ECG) would be excluded from leading the review. He noted that because the grievances are directly against ECG, allowing the utility provider to evaluate the claims would create a conflict of interest.

​The investigation will thoroughly examine reported meter malfunctions and incorrect billing practices, with strict corrective measures promised for any identified failures. Furthermore, the Minister reassured residents that compromised meters will be replaced, and any customers confirmed to have been overcharged will receive account credits to offset the excess amounts over time.
