We will demand from the South African government to protect our nationals - Hon. Okudzeto Ablakwa

2 min read

Ghana’s Minister for Foreign Affairs, Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa, has strongly condemned the recurring xenophobic attacks against foreign nationals in South Africa, describing the situation as “unacceptable” and deeply troubling. His remarks come amid renewed concerns over the safety of Ghanaians and other African migrants living in South Africa, following reported incidents of violence and intimidation targeting non-nationals.

According to the Minister, the Government of Ghana will not remain silent while its citizens face threats to their lives and livelihoods abroad. He emphasized that Ghana is committed to protecting its nationals wherever they may be and will take all necessary diplomatic steps to ensure their safety.

Hon. Ablakwa noted that such acts undermine the spirit of African unity and cooperation, which countries on the continent have long championed.

He further indicated that Ghana will formally engage the South African authorities through diplomatic channels to demand swift and decisive action. The Minister stressed that the South African government has a responsibility under international law to safeguard all individuals within its borders, regardless of nationality.

He called for enhanced security measures and strict enforcement against perpetrators of xenophobic violence to deter future occurrences.

Hon. Ablakwa also urged African leaders and regional bodies to take a united stance against xenophobia, warning that continued silence could embolden further attacks. He reiterated Ghana’s commitment to peaceful coexistence and regional integration but insisted that such ideals must be matched with concrete actions.

The Minister concluded by assuring Ghanaians living in South Africa that their government remains vigilant and resolute in defending their rights and dignity.
