Journalists, bloggers, and communication professionals in the Volta Region recently participated in an intensive one-day training workshop focused on digital content creation and informed reporting on the ECOWAS Free Movement Protocol. Organized under the “Reframing Narratives on Free Movement and Migration in West Africa” project, the session equipped about 100 participants with skills to promote regional integration and accurate migration stories.

The training highlighted the Volta Region’s strategic importance as a border area in facilitating free movement across West Africa. Facilitators emphasized ethical reporting, digital storytelling techniques, and the protocol’s benefits for trade, tourism, and cultural exchange. Participants discussed challenges like misinformation and how media can counter negative narratives around migration.

Mr. Dodoo and other resource persons stressed the need for a network of journalists to sustain public sensitization efforts. The workshop forms part of broader initiatives targeting Ghana’s border regions, including Western and Upper East, with over 300 participants trained overall. This capacity-building aims to foster informed public discourse on ECOWAS policies.

Attendees expressed enthusiasm about applying new skills to produce compelling content that supports regional cooperation. The training covered practical tools for mini-documentaries, social media campaigns, and fact-checking migration-related stories. Organizers hope this will lead to more balanced coverage that highlights opportunities rather than risks.

As Ghana continues to play a key role in ECOWAS, such media empowerment initiatives are vital for sustainable development. The Volta Region’s media practitioners are now better positioned to champion the free movement agenda, contributing to peace, economic growth, and stronger ties with neighboring countries.
