The Minister for the Interior, Hon. Muntaka Mohammed-Mubarak, has instructed Regional Commanders of the Ghana Immigration Service (GIS) to strictly enforce border control and immigration laws regarding undocumented non-citizens entering the nation.
Addressing the command structure during a meeting in Accra, Hon. Muntaka highlighted the escalating prevalence of street begging as an unlawful practice and a significant national security risk that requires urgent intervention.
"Street begging is illegal under Ghanaian law. It introduces serious security risks and cannot be tolerated," the Minister stated.
He tasked immigration personnel with fulfilling their duty as the primary gatekeepers of national entry and exit points, calling on them to enhance operational effectiveness to safeguard Ghana's sovereign borders.
Delivering a clear directive on professional conduct, the Minister cautioned that any officer implicated in illegal practices or systemic compromise would face swift and severe disciplinary and legal consequences. Commanders were further instructed to disseminate this warning to all operational staff nationwide to protect national security.
In addition to direct border enforcement, Hon. Muntaka advised officers to partner with property owners and landlords to ensure proper tenant verification and background checks.
The Ministry reiterated its dedication to resolving the issue of street begging and ensuring public safety and order across all regions.
