Hon Dzifa Abla Gomashie Leads The Launch of Kusaal, Likpakpaanl and Sisaali Orthographies in Accra

2 min read

In a landmark celebration of Ghana’s rich linguistic diversity, the standardised orthographies for Kusaal, Likpakpaanl, and Sisaali languages were officially launched yesterday at the National Theatre in Accra. The event, despite minor hitches, was marked by joy and cultural pride as these important indigenous languages took a major step toward formal recognition and preservation. Hon. Dzifa Abla Gomashie, Member of Parliament for Ketu South, who played a key role in the initiative, described the occasion as a triumph for culture.

The launch paves the way for the next crucial phase: integrating these standardised writing systems into the formal education curriculum. By teaching Kusaal, Likpakpaanl, and Sisaali in schools, authorities aim to promote inclusive education that respects and nurtures Ghana’s multilingual heritage. This development is also expected to facilitate the integration of these languages into modern technology platforms, ensuring they remain living languages in the digital age.

“Language is the soul of a people. When we preserve our languages, we preserve our identity, our knowledge systems and our future,” Hon. Gomashie emphasised. “Those who neglect their languages risk losing their history and cultural heritage.” Through the dedicated efforts of the Bureau of Ghana Languages, led by Ebenezer Ahiator Esq., these initiatives are securing the future of communities by protecting their stories, traditions, and unique worldviews.

Special appreciation was extended to the various committees and language experts whose tireless work made the orthographies possible. Hon. Gomashie also thanked the Chairman of the event, Hon. Cletus Apul Avoka Esq., as well as the Traditional Leaders and people of the Kusaasi, Konkomba, and Sissala communities for their support and participation. Several distinguished colleagues from these communities graced the occasion, including Majority Leader and MP for Bawku Central, Hon. Mahama Ayariga; Hon. Joseph Nikpe, MP for Saboba; Transport Minister and MP for Bimbilla, Dominic Nitiwul; MP for Kpandai, Hon. Nyindam, among others.

The successful launch underscores a renewed national commitment to linguistic preservation. As Ghana continues to honour its diverse heritage, initiatives like this strengthen cultural identity and build a more inclusive society for generations to come. Hon. Dzifa Abla Gomashie expressed profound gratitude to everyone who contributed to this milestone achievement.
