A High Court in Ho has directed the New Patriotic Party (NPP) in the Volta Region to reopen the membership registration exercise for the Keta, Anlo, and Akatsi South constituencies.
The court ruled that constituency executives were unlawfully prevented from participating in the party’s ongoing reorganization process. On June 25, the court dismissed a counter-motion filed by the party and ordered each defendant to pay GH¢3,000 in costs to the plaintiffs.
Hon. Dr. Benjamin Sena Dzameshie, Chairman of the Keta Constituency NPP, welcomed the ruling. He explained that the party’s reorganization guidelines required membership registers to be made available at polling stations so that all eligible members could register. However, in these three constituencies, the registers were allegedly removed from the elected executives and handed over to individuals aligned with certain interests.
“I am a former parliamentary candidate for Keta. Up to today, I have not been allowed to write my name in the register,” Dr. Dzameshie stated. He added that many other genuine party members in the affected areas faced similar exclusion.
The plaintiffs first exhausted internal party grievance channels before approaching the court. According to Dr. Dzameshie, the court encouraged both parties to resolve the matter amicably in the spirit of unity, while cautioning that the case would proceed if the registers are not reopened as directed.
The suit named the NPP’s General Secretary and the party itself as defendants.
This development is expected to ensure broader participation and transparency in the NPP’s reorganization exercise in the Volta Region.
