Ghana Navy Intercepts $1 Million Marijuana Shipment on Volta Lake

1 min read

The Ghana Navy has intercepted two boats carrying approximately 4.8 tonnes of suspected marijuana on the Volta Lake. Executed by the Riverine Command around 01:00 hours, the intelligence-led operation successfully disrupted a major maritime smuggling route. Officials suspect the massive narcotics shipment was intended for transport to Nigeria.

Director of Naval Operations at the Naval Headquarters, Naval Captain Festus Osei-Brobbey, announced the seizure during a press briefing at Ada. He revealed that the intercepted shipment consisted of 117 sacks, with each sack containing roughly 80 packs of the suspected narcotics. The entire consignment carries an estimated street value exceeding $1 million.

This high-profile interception highlights the ongoing efforts of the Ghana Navy to curb illegal trafficking across the country's inland waterways. The Volta Lake has increasingly become a critical route for organized crime networks attempting to transport illicit goods across West African borders, making continuous riverine patrols essential to regional security.

Following the seizure, security agencies have launched further investigations to identify and apprehend the individuals and syndicates behind the shipment. The Ghanian security authorities reaffirmed their commitment to strengthening maritime surveillance and collaborating with regional partners to combat cross-border drug trafficking.
