The Member of Parliament for Ketu North, Hon. Eric Edem Agbana, on Monday, October 12, 2026, led a high-level delegation to the Ministry of Food and Agriculture. The delegation comprising traditional chiefs, local rice farmers, and concerned youth from Weta delivered a formal petition directly to ministry officials in Accra, demanding immediate government intervention to address the severe challenges currently crippling the Weta Irrigation Scheme.
The petition was officially received on behalf of the Minister for Food and Agriculture by Deputy Minister Hon. John Dumelo. Receiving the delegation, Hon. Dumelo assured the team of the government’s firm commitment to rehabilitating the facility and providing the necessary support to rice farmers in the enclave. He noted that restoring the once-thriving agricultural hub remains a strategic priority for the nation's food production roadmap.
At the center of the petition is an urgent call for the complete physical rehabilitation of the irrigation scheme to reclaim vast expanses of farmlands severely degraded by years of neglect, operational breakdown, and flooding. With over 1,200 families directly affected by the facility's decline, the community is appealing for structured compensation packages to help displaced and suffering farmers rebuild their livelihoods. Furthermore, the delegation petitioned for a transparent and thorough investigation into the utilization of World Bank funds previously allocated for the redevelopment of the scheme.
Stakeholders stress that the Weta Irrigation Scheme represents a vital state asset with immense capacity to scale up domestic rice cultivation, generate youth employment, and bolster Ghana's national food security. The ongoing deterioration of the infrastructure has placed a severe economic burden on local communities, threatening both food supply and rural stability across the Ketu North municipality.
Reaffirming his commitment to his constituents, Hon. Edem Agbana pledged to relentlessly engage state authorities and monitor progress until concrete, measurable actions are taken. He emphasized that the petition must serve as a catalyst for a clear rehabilitation roadmap, absolute accountability for committed funds, and a reliable pathway toward restoring the livelihoods of affected farmers.
