“Don't Politicise Xenophobia” – Edem Agbana Fires Back at Asafo-Adjei in Heated Parliamentary Exchange

A heated debate erupted in Parliament as lawmakers discussed recent xenophobic tensions involving Ghanaians abroad, with Ketu North MP Hon. Eric Edem Agbana taking strong exception to remarks made by Bosome Freho MP Hon. Nana Asafo-Adjei Ayeh. The exchange quickly drew attention from both sides of the House, highlighting the sensitivity of the issue and the need for a united national response.

Contributing to the debate, Agbana argued that matters affecting the safety and dignity of Ghanaians should never be reduced to partisan politics. He maintained that xenophobic incidents, regardless of where they occur, demand a coordinated national response focused on protecting citizens and preserving Ghana's international relations. According to him, political actors must exercise caution in their comments to avoid inflaming tensions.

The Ketu North legislator further stressed that the government and the Foreign Affairs Ministry must remain proactive in engaging affected countries through diplomatic channels.

He noted that while Parliament has a duty to hold the government accountable, lawmakers must also demonstrate statesmanship when discussing matters that could impact Ghana's relations with neighbouring countries and the wider African community.

Agbana's remarks were widely interpreted as a direct rebuttal to attempts to assign political blame over the handling of the issue. He urged Parliament to focus on practical solutions, including support for affected victims, diplomatic engagement and stronger regional cooperation to prevent future incidents. His contribution received attention both within Parliament and on social media, where many observers praised his call for restraint and national unity.

The debate underscores the growing concern over xenophobia across parts of Africa and the potential impact such incidents can have on regional integration. As discussions continue, many Ghanaians will be looking to Parliament and the government for leadership that prioritises the welfare of citizens while preserving the country's longstanding reputation as a beacon of peace, tolerance and Pan-African solidarity.
