As part of a nationwide $1.1 billion infrastructure plan, MTN Ghana will construct 80 new network sites across the country’s five northern regions this year to improve coverage and signal strength.
The announcement was made by Emmanuel Kwei Afutu, Senior Manager for Base Station Subsystems, during events marking the company’s 30th anniversary in Ghana. He revealed that $380 million of the total budget has been allocated specifically for network expansion in 2026.
The northern rollout will be distributed as follows:
Northern Region: 38 new sites
Savannah Region: 17 new sites
Upper East Region: 14 new sites
North East Region: 11 new sites
Upper West Region: 1 new site
Across the entire country, MTN aims to deploy 500 new sites during 2026, marking one of its most extensive infrastructure rollouts in recent years. Mr. Afutu emphasized that the initiative focuses on the practical digital opportunities the enhanced connectivity will bring to users.
The network upgrade responds to rapidly growing demand for digital financial services. In the first half of 2026, Mobile Money (MoMo) transaction values surged by 44.4% year-on-year, accompanied by a 23.3% increase in total transaction volume.
Robust financial results are funding the capital investment. During the first six months of 2026, MTN Ghana recorded a 32.3% increase in revenue to 15 billion Ghana cedis, while net profit grew 46.8% to 5.1 billion cedis. The company also contributed 5.6 billion cedis in direct and indirect taxes to the state during the same timeframe.
"As Ghana grows, we will grow with Ghana; our ambition has moved from simply connecting people to connecting people to opportunities," Mr. Afutu stated.
