The Minister for Roads and Highways and Member of Parliament for Adaklu, Kwame Governs Agbodza, has cautioned residents living around the Adaklu mountain range to desist from cultivating and other human activities that are gradually destroying the vegetation cover in the area.
According to the Minister, unchecked activities such as deforestation and indiscriminate cultivation may have contributed to the devastating mudslide that struck parts of the community on Wednesday following heavy rainfall.
Speaking during an assessment visit to the affected communities, Hon. Agbodza expressed concern over the increasing encroachment on the mountain lands, warning that continued destruction of trees and natural barriers could expose residents to more environmental disasters in the future. He stressed that the safety of the people must take precedence over all other activities and urged residents to cooperate with authorities in preserving the environment.
The mudslide, which occurred after hours of intense rainfall, caused panic among residents as large quantities of mud and debris swept through sections of the community.
Several properties were affected while roads in parts of the area became difficult to access. Though no death has been reported, the incident has raised fresh concerns about environmental degradation and the growing impact of climate-related disasters in vulnerable communities.
Hon. Agbodza noted that mountains and forest reserves play a critical role in protecting communities from erosion, flooding, and landslides. He therefore called on traditional leaders, assembly authorities, and environmental agencies to intensify education and enforcement measures aimed at protecting the Adaklu mountain ecosystem. He added that restoring degraded lands through tree planting and conservation efforts would help reduce the risk of future disasters.
Residents have meanwhile been urged to remain cautious during the rainy season and report any signs of erosion or land movement to local authorities for immediate intervention.
The Roads and Highways Minister assured the affected communities of government support while emphasizing the need for collective responsibility in safeguarding the environment for future generations.
