The Member of Parliament for Ketu South, Abla Dzifa Gomashie, has called on Ghanaians to adopt more responsible attitudes toward environmental sanitation as part of efforts to address the recurring flooding challenges across the country. Speaking on the issue, the legislator stressed that human activities, particularly improper waste disposal practices, continue to contribute significantly to flood disasters in many communities.
According to Hon. Gomashie, while government interventions such as the construction of drains and desilting exercises are important, they alone cannot solve the problem if citizens fail to play their part. She noted that indiscriminate dumping of refuse into gutters and waterways obstructs the free flow of water, leading to flooding whenever heavy rains occur.
The Ketu South MP emphasized that changing public attitudes toward waste management is crucial in preventing future flood-related incidents. She observed that many of the drainage systems designed to channel rainwater effectively have become clogged with plastic waste and other debris due to irresponsible disposal habits. As a result, communities continue to experience avoidable flooding that destroys property and disrupts livelihoods.
Hon. Gomashie further urged local authorities, community leaders, and environmental agencies to intensify public education on sanitation and environmental responsibility. She indicated that sustained awareness campaigns would help citizens understand the consequences of their actions and encourage them to adopt cleaner and safer waste disposal practices.
She concluded by calling for a collective national effort to tackle the flood menace, stressing that the responsibility does not rest solely on government institutions. According to her, meaningful progress can only be achieved when citizens actively support environmental protection measures and demonstrate a commitment to keeping their surroundings clean.
