GPRTU to Increase Transport Fares by 8% Starting September 26

The Ghana Private Road Transport Union (GPRTU) has announced an 8% increase in transport fares, effective Saturday, September 26, 2026. The decision follows a final negotiation meeting on Tuesday, September 22, between union executives and the Ministry of Transport to address rising operational costs for commercial drivers while cushioning the public against steep price hikes.

​Initially, the GPRTU firmly pushed for a 30% upward adjustment, maintaining that operating under the current fare structure was becoming unsustainable for drivers and vehicle owners. However, during negotiations, the Ministry of Transport conveyed presidential directives regarding anticipated reductions in petroleum product prices, prompting the union to compromise and agree on a lower, single-digit increment.

​Speaking on TV3’s Ghana Tonight, GPRTU Deputy Public Relations Officer Samuel Amoah explained that while government representatives initially advocated for maintaining existing rates, the union insisted that some level of adjustment was necessary to keep transport businesses afloat. The GPRTU is currently finalizing the updated fare schedule and will distribute the revised rates to all members across the country to ensure seamless implementation on Saturday.
