The University of Applied Sciences Zwickau in Germany is looking to establish a strategic partnership with the Ho Teaching Hospital (HTH). The proposed alliance aims to open new doors for practical clinical training, joint research projects, staff exchange initiatives, and professional development across healthcare and health management disciplines.
The exploratory discussions took place during a high-level visit to HTH by a delegation from the German institution. The delegation was led by Professor Dominike Kunze and Professor René Schübert, experts specializing in health management, finance, economics, public health, and health services research. They were joined by Professor Elvis Tarkang, Dean of International Programmes at the University of Health and Allied Sciences (UHAS).
Supported by the University of Applied Sciences Zwickau, this visit builds on an established academic framework between Germany’s University of Applied Sciences Schmalkalden and UHAS, which previously enabled Ghanaian students to join a six-month exchange program in Germany in 2024.
Rather than sticking solely to standard student exchanges, the talks centered on expanding international academic cooperation. Key priorities include hands-on clinical and administrative attachments, multidisciplinary training, joint research ventures, staff mobility, and continuous knowledge sharing among HTH, UHAS, and their German partners.
The visit offered the German representatives an inside look at HTH’s daily operations, specialist clinical services, administrative structures, and future goals, helping both parties pin down areas of mutual benefit.
Welcoming the delegation, Mr. Anthony Bells Kafui Kanyi, Acting Head of Public Relations at HTH, delivered a presentation on the hospital’s evolution and long-term vision. He highlighted major expansion plans, including a proposed 500-bed ultra-modern facility featuring a dedicated oncology center to build on the hospital's existing specialist offerings.
Mr. Kanyi also spotlighted HTH’s expanding role in medical and wellness tourism, noting that the facility regularly treats patients from across West Africa, including Togo, Benin, and Nigeria. Among its integrative healthcare offerings is a dedicated Music Therapy Studio designed to support traditional treatment methods within a holistic healing setup.
Both parties explored how HTH and the German university could construct practical, cross-departmental training programs. These initiatives would give students and healthcare professionals valuable exposure to differing health systems and operational management strategies. Core areas targeted for future cooperation include health management training, public health research, staff exchange, and clinical learning.
During a guided tour of the facility, the delegation visited key departments, including the Accident and Emergency Unit and the Family Health Centre. While at the Family Health Centre, the professors met with the Customer Care team to examine how the hospital tracks, documents, and resolves patient feedback and complaints.
The professors expressed strong interest in HTH’s structured approach to patient feedback management, noting that similar customer service frameworks could offer significant value to healthcare facilities back in Germany.
