Ghana’s Vice President, Professor Jane Naana Opoku-Agyemang, joined the Pharmaceutical Society of Ghana to mark the opening of its 90th anniversary and Annual General Meeting, celebrated under the theme “Science. Impact. Legacy: 90 Years of Pharmaceutical Excellence.” Highlighting the vital role pharmacists play as frontline healthcare providers, she emphasized that their accessibility, professional integrity, and expertise are foundational to strengthening the nation's healthcare delivery. As national health initiatives like Free Primary Healthcare and the Ghana Medical Trust Fund (MahamaCares) continue to expand access to care, the dedication and high standards of the healthcare workforce remain critical to their ultimate success.
Central to the address was the government’s ambitious target to scale up local pharmaceutical manufacturing to cover 70% of national consumption within the next five years. This strategic shift aims to significantly reduce Ghana's reliance on imported medicines while unlocking broad economic opportunities through job creation, research, and innovation. However, Vice President Opoku-Agyemang underscored that rapid expansion must go hand-in-hand with uncompromising quality, ensuring that Ghanaian-manufactured pharmaceuticals meet rigorous global standards and can compete confidently across international markets.
