Disaster Unfolding: Thousands in Volta Region Face Total Wipeout from Deadly Tidal Waves – Will Their Homes Survive?

2 min read

Coastal communities in the Volta Region are in panic mode as relentless tidal waves and erosion threaten to swallow entire villages, displacing thousands and destroying homes in heartbreaking scenes. Areas like Ketu South and Anloga are bearing the brunt, with farmlands submerged and residents living in constant fear.

Over a hundred communities stand on the verge of collapse, with recent incidents in Amutinu-Salakope leaving families desperate for help despite partial interventions like the Blekusu Sea Defence Project. The scale of destruction has left many questioning if enough is being done fast enough.

Calls for urgent sustainable sea defence measures are growing louder, as lawmakers and locals warn that without immediate action, more than 50 communities could be completely submerged in the coming months. The human cost, including lost livelihoods and psychological trauma, is mounting daily.

National Disaster Management Organisation reports highlight the displacement of hundreds, with homes, schools, and even cemeteries washed away by the unforgiving sea. Affected residents are appealing to the government for swift relocation support and stronger protections.

While some progress on sea defence works offers a glimmer of hope, the ongoing crisis underscores the desperate need for comprehensive solutions to safeguard these vulnerable coastal populations before it’s too late.
