BREAKING: Flood kills toddler, mother and others in Western region

2 min read

On June 18, 2026, torrential rains caused severe flooding in Samreboi, within Ghana’s Wassa Amenfi West Municipality in the Western Region. The heavy downpour rapidly submerged homes, schools, markets, and other key areas, displacing hundreds of residents who fled with limited possessions. Nearby communities were also affected, highlighting the widespread impact of the seasonal rains on local infrastructure and daily life.

Tragically, the flooding resulted in the loss of two lives, including a 17-month-old toddler. The child reportedly fell ill amid the chaos of the family trying to salvage belongings, passing away en route to or at medical care. The child’s father shared the family’s heartbreaking experience with local media. A second victim, described in reports as a 70-year-old man (with some mentions of a 17-year-old), also perished.

Hundreds sought refuge in emergency shelters such as churches (including the Power Chapel) and schools like the Samatif School Complex, with some directed to safer areas like Asankwa. The National Disaster Management Organisation (NADMO) and municipal authorities have initiated relief efforts, distributing items like mosquito nets while continuing damage assessments across the impacted zones.

Residents and observers have linked the severity of the flooding to illegal mining activities, known locally as galamsey, which have contributed to river siltation and reduced natural drainage over time. This incident underscores broader environmental challenges in flood-prone regions of Ghana during the rainy season, where human activities can intensify the effects of extreme weather.

Recovery efforts are ongoing as authorities provide support to affected families and communities begin rebuilding. This tragedy serves as a stark reminder of the vulnerabilities faced by residents in the Western Region and the need for sustained measures to address both climate risks and environmental degradation. Condolences go out to all who lost loved ones.
