An 87-year-old man, identified as Yaw Gahornu, has been sentenced to 20 years’ imprisonment with hard labour after being convicted of defiling a nine-year-old girl in Ofankor, a suburb of Accra. The conviction was secured by the Tesano Divisional Police Command following legal proceedings at the Gender-Based Violence Court located at the DOVVSU Headquarters, where the accused was found guilty of defilement.
The incident came to light on August 29, 2026, when the victim’s mother returned home from work and noticed bloodstains on her daughter's clothing. Upon questioning, the child revealed that she had been subjected to repeated sexual abuse including both vaginal and anal penetration by Gahornu between July and August 2026. Subsequent investigations revealed that the convict lured the young girl into his sleeping quarters and issued death threats to prevent her from telling her mother.
The abuse was further substantiated on August 31, 2026, when the convict's own granddaughter witnessed the act and immediately alerted family members, including the child's mother. The matter was swiftly reported to law enforcement authorities, leading to Gahornu's arrest, formal charging, and subsequent court trial.
In an official press release dated October 12, 2026, signed by Chief Superintendent Juliana Obeng, Head of Public Affairs for the Accra Region, the Accra Regional Police Command welcomed the court's verdict. Reaffirming its commitment to safeguarding children and vulnerable groups, the Police Command urged members of the public to promptly report any suspected cases of child abuse to the police for investigation and decisive legal action.
