37 Military Hospital Hosts PTSD Awareness Session for Spouses of Deployed Troops

2 min read

On Wednesday, 19 August 2026, the Therapy and Wellness Department of the 37 Military Hospital organized an enlightenment program for spouses of military personnel currently deployed to Lebanon and other international peacekeeping missions. The event took place at the Barwah Barracks in Tamale.

Held under the theme "Understanding the Invisible Wounds of Trauma: Preparing the Home Front," the session aimed to educate military families on how to identify the psychological impacts of trauma and offer effective emotional support to their partners upon their return home.

The presentation was led by Major Carl Seyram Necku alongside Mr. Sulemana Abdul Rashid, both from the 37 Military Hospital.

In his address, Major Necku described Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD) as a manageable mental health condition that often arises after exposure to severe life events. He highlighted that trauma can present as acute, chronic, or complex, stemming from situations such as combat, physical assault, abuse, domestic violence, severe accidents, or other prolonged traumatic experiences.

He emphasized that while PTSD does not leave obvious physical marks, its unseen psychological strain can deeply impair an individual’s personal well-being, family relationships, and daily productivity.

The organizers underscored the essential role that families play in spotting subtle behavioral changes early, ensuring that returning peacekeepers receive the timely support and care needed for a smooth reintegration.
