The Minister-designate for Environment, Science and Technology, Dr. Zanetor Agyeman-Rawlings, has detailed a comprehensive plan to fortify environmental safeguards across the nation through enhanced waste management initiatives, proactive climate strategies, and stricter oversight of imported hazardous chemicals.

Speaking before Parliament’s Appointments Committee during her vetting, the Klottey-Korle lawmaker revealed that the country intends to tap into carbon dioxide trading avenues via the expansion of its carbon market, backed by World Bank assistance to mitigate climate change impacts.

To tackle the ongoing sanitation challenges, the nominee emphasized upgrading both sewage systems and solid waste management, noting specific interests in innovative methods like converting plastic waste into usable fuel.

Furthermore, Dr. Agyeman-Rawlings committed to tightening surveillance at national borders to better track incoming chemical substances. She also announced plans to systematically monitor subterranean water sources, agricultural soils, and farmlands to gauge the environmental reach of mercury contamination.

Addressing technological advancement, she underscored the urgency of establishing robust legislative guardrails and maintaining active human oversight to guarantee transparency and public accountability in the deployment of artificial intelligence among state agencies.
