The Acting Savannah Regional Fire Commander, DOI Alhassan Abubakari, has paid an official working visit to the construction site of the proposed 24-hour economy market and commercial centre in Damongo. The inspection formed part of the Ghana National Fire Service’s routine safety oversight to ensure that major public infrastructure projects incorporate essential fire protection measures from the onset. During the visit, the Fire Commander toured the site to evaluate the progress of work and assess whether the facility’s design aligns with national fire safety standards.
While engaging with the site engineer and construction team, DOI Abubakari carefully reviewed the architectural drawings for the project. He observed that the proposed fire post provision comprised only a single room or office. Addressing this limitation, the Commander recommended the addition of an extra room to ensure crew members have adequate space to rest, store emergency equipment, and change comfortably when on duty. He emphasized that proper operational quarters are vital for maintaining team readiness and swift emergency response.
In addition to the physical layout of the fire post, DOI Abubakari urged the contractors to adhere strictly to all approved fire permit requirements. He placed special emphasis on the timely installation and strategic placement of fire hydrants throughout the commercial centre. The Commander noted that adequate hydrant coverage is critical for securing a reliable water supply during potential fire emergencies, safeguarding both traders and investment assets within the market.
Responding to the observations, the Site Engineer expressed appreciation for the Fire Commander’s proactive guidance and professional insights. He assured DOI Abubakari that his recommendations would be given immediate attention, promising to engage the relevant project stakeholders and architectural consultants to review the plans and integrate the necessary safety adjustments into the ongoing construction.
