Hon. James Gunu, the Volta Regional Minister, joined residents of Sogakope, Abor, and Akatsi alongside security services, waste management agencies, and other key stakeholders for the two-day National Day of Cleaning Exercise. The initiative, launched by H.E. John Dramani Mahama, President of the Republic of Ghana, was held under the compelling theme “Our Actions, Our Future: Cleaning Ghana After the Floods.” The exercise aimed to restore cleanliness and resilience in communities affected by recent flooding.
Participants worked tirelessly across the three districts, desilting drains, clearing refuse from public spaces, and sanitizing streets and markets. The visible enthusiasm, commitment, and collaborative spirit displayed by both residents and officials highlighted a strong sense of shared responsibility. This collective effort demonstrated that unified action remains essential in building cleaner, healthier, and more resilient communities in the Volta Region.
In his address, Hon. James Gunu urged residents to embrace environmental cleanliness as a daily civic responsibility rather than a one-off activity. He emphasized that maintaining clean surroundings is a shared duty requiring sustained collaboration among government institutions, traditional authorities, and every citizen. The minister’s message sought to transform the momentum of the national exercise into long-term behavioral change.
To bolster ongoing sanitation efforts and improve community preparedness, the Volta Regional Co-ordinating Council donated wheelbarrows, Wellington boots, and Aquatabs. Hon. Gunu expressed profound gratitude to the Chief Director of the Volta Regional Co-ordinating Council, Alhaji Mohammed Avorna Akape; Volta Regional Director of Environmental Health, Madam Stella Kumedzro; Regional Director of NADMO, Mr. Pascal Agbagba; Municipal and District Chief Executives, security services, and all dedicated volunteers whose hard work ensured the success of the exercise.
As the region continues with Day 2 of the National General Cleaning Exercise, the momentum generated on the first day promises sustained impact across the Volta Region. The initiative underscores the critical role of community-government partnerships in safeguarding public health and environmental sustainability long after the floods have receded.
