Hon. Samuel Nartey George, Member of Parliament for Ningo Prampram, has expressed deep concern over the devastating impact of recent floods on Ghana’s vibrant tech and innovation ecosystem. In a heartfelt Facebook post, the MP detailed his visit to the Accra Digital Centre to assess the extent of the damage caused by yesterday’s floods. He described the scene as heartbreaking, highlighting the disruption to businesses, innovators, entrepreneurs, and especially the many young people whose work has been affected.
The Accra Digital Centre serves as Ghana’s premier hub for startups and young innovators. It also hosts a learning centre under the One Million Coders Programme. According to the MP, the damage to equipment and infrastructure at the facility is severe, requiring substantial resources to restore full functionality. “It was heartbreaking to witness the impact on businesses, innovators, entrepreneurs and the many young people whose work has been disrupted,” Hon. Samuel Nartey George stated.
In response to the crisis, the MP has assured affected businesses and the Centre’s management of his commitment to support recovery efforts. He pledged to engage relevant stakeholders to provide necessary assistance and explore practical measures aimed at reducing the risk of similar incidents in the future. His words offered a message of solidarity: “My thoughts are with everyone affected, and I sincerely hope for a swift recovery.”
As heavy rains continue to pose threats across the region, Hon. Samuel Nartey George urged citizens to prioritise safety. He called on everyone to play their part in environmental protection, emphasising the importance of maintaining clean surroundings and keeping drains free from waste to prevent future flooding.
The MP’s visit and public statement underscore the critical role of the Accra Digital Centre in nurturing Ghana’s next generation of tech talent. Stakeholders and the public alike now look forward to coordinated efforts that will help rebuild this vital innovation hub and safeguard it against recurring climate-related challenges.
