1 min read

The Honourable Kenneth Gilbert Agyei has officially taken office as Ghana's Minister for Defence, succeeding Hon. Dr. Cassiel Ato Baah Forson. The transition was formalized during a handing and taking over ceremony at the Ministry of Defence in Accra on Friday, August 14, 2026.

Dr. Ato Forson, who serves as Finance Minister, had been acting as Defence Minister following the tragic passing of the substantive Minister, Dr. Edward Omane Boamah, in a helicopter crash.

Welcoming his successor, Dr. Ato Forson expressed confidence in the new Minister's capabilities, noting that Hon. Gilbert Agyei's previous service as Deputy Minister for Defence provides him with a solid background to guide the ministry forward.

In his remarks, Hon. Kenneth Gilbert Agyei emphasized that his previous role as Deputy Minister gave him a profound appreciation for the discipline, professionalism, and selfless commitment of the Ghana Armed Forces (GAF).

Also speaking at the event, the Deputy Minister for Defence, Hon. Ernest Borgia Genfi, welcomed the new Minister back to familiar terrain. He noted that Hon. Agyei brings valuable leadership experience from his most recent assignment as Minister for Works, Housing, and Water Resources, where he demonstrated exceptional drive and oversight.
