Work is underway to restore the Lafa water retention basin in Mallam, an initiative by the government designed to tackle persistent flooding across Mallam, Weija, Dansoman, and neighboring communities.
The 48 Engineer Regiment of the Ghana Armed Forces is managing the field operations. Their main focus is clearing years of built-up refuse, silt, and unauthorized structures that have drastically restricted the basin's water capacity.
Key aspects of the project involve dredging the basin, hauling waste to approved landfill sites, tearing down illegal buildings situated within the water reserve, and creating protective embankments to prevent future encroachment.
Coordinated by the Post-Flood Mitigation Task Force, this exercise is part of a wider national drive to open up blocked waterways and drainage systems throughout Accra following the severe flooding on June 29.
The government has deployed the necessary equipment and funding to back the project, with similar drainage and clearance projects currently taking place in Oyarifa, East Legon, and around the Kpeshie Lagoon.
Authorities are calling on the general public to support the task force and refrain from dumping waste or building near waterways to ensure these flood prevention measures remain effective.
