The Deputy Minister for Food and Agriculture, Hon. John Dumelo, has announced the construction of a new tomato processing factory at Anloga in the Volta Region. The government-led initiative is strategically designed to tackle the chronic problem of tomato gluts, which routinely force local farmers to sell their produce at bottom-dollar prices or watch tons of fresh tomatoes go to waste.
The state-of-the-art facility will focus on processing excess yields into paste and other shelf-stable products, transforming potential waste into valuable commercial goods. By absorbing surplus harvests during peak production seasons, the processing plant aims to stabilize market prices, secure better livelihoods for local farmers, and significantly reduce Ghana's reliance on imported tomato paste.
Highlighting the project's ambitious timeline, Hon. John Dumelo emphasized the government's commitment to delivering a sustainable solution for the farming community. "Moving forward, a factory is being put up in Anloga to process the excesses. It should be ready by next year," he disclosed, signaling a transformative shift toward value addition and industrial growth in the Volta Region's agricultural sector.
