Atsiekpui Alavanyo D/A Basic School in the Akatsi South Municipality has taken a major step forward in sanitation and hygiene following the construction and official handover of an ultra-modern toilet facility and urinal by GCB Bank PLC. The project was inspired by a viral Facebook post by a teacher at the school, Mr. Sitsofe Vuvor, which brought the pupils' plight to light. Prompted by a customer who saw the post, three local GCB Bank branches Akatsi, Abor, and Sogakope joined forces to fund and deliver the much-needed infrastructure as part of the bank's corporate social responsibility drive.
Speaking at the colorful handing-over ceremony, the Volta Regional Manager of GCB Bank PLC, Mr. Selorm Hotor, commended the three branches for their initiative and lauded Mr. Vuvor for using social media constructively to advocate for his school. He urged the public, particularly young people, to leverage digital platforms for community development rather than negative pursuits. Mr. Hotor emphasized that the bank remains committed to executing impactful social interventions across Ghana and encouraged individuals and businesses to bank with GCB PLC to support such community development initiatives.
Stakeholders at the event expressed deep appreciation for the intervention while highlighting additional needs for the school. The Municipal Director of Education, Mr. Karim Umar Ayana, alongside the school's headmistress, thanked GCB Bank for the gesture and urged the school's leadership to maintain the facility well. They also appealed to the bank, the Municipal Assembly, and other benevolent organizations for assistance in constructing a three-unit classroom block to further improve learning conditions for the pupils.
The Municipal Chief Executive (MCE) for Akatsi South, Hon. Daniel Dagba, commended GCB Bank PLC, noting that government relies on corporate partnerships to address development gaps. He assured residents that the local assembly is actively working to improve the community's road network, assuring them of their fair share of national development. The ceremony was attended by local leaders, community members, school officials, branch managers Mr. Andrew Adusu (Akatsi) and Dr. Kuma Adeku (Sogakope), and Mama Avenor 2025, who distributed exercise books to the pupils.
