Foreign Affairs Ministry Outlines Government’s special package for Ghanaians evacuating from South Africa due to xenophobic attacks

The Government of Ghana, through the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, has officially announced a comprehensive relief and reintegration package for Ghanaian citizens returning home from South Africa.

This urgent intervention follows the state-backed emergency evacuation of nationals from South Africa, a direct response to a distressing spike in xenophobic attacks and anti-immigrant protests targeting sub-Saharan African migrants. In a public message, the Ministry underscored its commitment to the safety of its diaspora, stating, "We value and cherish all our citizens."

To ensure returning citizens face minimum hardship upon arrival, the government has instituted an immediate "Welcome Home Financial Package." This initial financial buffer is designed to help returnees cover their immediate, pressing expenses as they step off the plane. Recognizing that many are fleeing volatile situations with few personal belongings, this baseline support aims to offer immediate stability during their first hours back on Ghanaian soil.

Beyond immediate monetary aid, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs has coordinated extensive logistical operations to assist returnees with travel within the country. The government is providing fully funded Transportation Assistance to convey individuals and families from the arrival point directly to their various destinations across Ghana. This ensures that no citizen is left stranded at the airport and can safely reunite with their families and hometown communities without incurring heavy travel costs.

Understanding that long-term recovery requires more than just physical relocation, the state has also introduced a dedicated Re-integration Allowance paired with Free Psychosocial Support. The psychological toll of fleeing violence can be deeply traumatic, and the provision of mental health professionals is geared toward helping returnees process their experiences. Meanwhile, the integration allowance is intended to serve as a financial bridge, helping individuals settle back into the local economy and rebuild their lives comfortably.

Finally, the government is looking toward the future of these citizens by facilitating their smooth entry into the domestic workforce.

Returnees will gain immediate entry into a special database for Jobs and Startup Opportunities managed by state agencies. This database aims to match the skills of returning nationals with active employment options and provide entrepreneurial resources for those looking to launch businesses, ensuring that their return home marks the beginning of a secure and productive chapter.
