VIDEO:Floodwaters Submerge Parts of Sogakope South as Heavy Downpour Triggers Emergency Rescues and Calls for Action

2 min read

Heavy rainfall pounded the Volta Region of Ghana early on Sunday morning, leaving large sections of Sogakope South underwater and prompting urgent rescue and relief efforts. Residents in low-lying communities near the riverbank woke up to floodwaters surging into their homes and submerging major roads after intense rains began around 4:00 a.m. Local leaders, including Assembly Member Gleku Williams Kofi, quickly mobilized to assess the damage and coordinate responses, highlighting the vulnerability of these areas during the rainy season.

The flooding, which reached knee- to waist-level in several spots including around Williago Park, affected homes close to landmarks such as Villa Cisneros Resort, Holy Trinity Spa, and the Modal University College (Nurses Training). According to the Assembly Member, obstructed waterways and runoff from surrounding higher grounds exacerbated the situation, turning what should be a life-giving rain into a recurring nightmare for residents. Many homes along the riverbank were inundated as floodwaters backed up due to blocked natural drainage paths, with some landowners reportedly resisting efforts to clear or expand channels on their properties.

No casualties have been reported so far, but the impact on daily life has been significant. Residents appealed for immediate assistance as personal belongings and properties suffered water damage. In response to the crisis, the area's Member of Parliament, Maxwell Kwame Lukutor, contacted the National Disaster Management Organisation (NADMO), while the South Tongu District Chief Executive, Victoria Dzeklo, deployed drones for aerial assessment and is overseeing the situation on the ground. Children under 18 were advised to stay away from school until conditions improve.

This latest incident underscores long-standing challenges in Sogakope South, where flooding occurs more frequently than in other parts of the township due to its topography and proximity to the river. Community leaders have repeatedly called for sustainable solutions, including better enforcement of drainage projects and collaboration with landowners to prevent future obstructions. Similar flooding events in nearby areas like Adutor have already destroyed farmlands and displaced families, affecting hundreds of residents and causing millions of cedis in damages.

As rescue and recovery operations continue, authorities urge residents to remain vigilant during this rainy season. The event serves as a reminder of the broader need for climate resilience measures, improved urban planning, and community preparedness in flood-prone regions of Ghana. Residents and officials alike hope that swift intervention and long-term infrastructure improvements will mitigate the risks posed by future downpours.
