The Technical Advisor at the Ministry of Finance, Dr. Theo Acheampong, has assured the public and international stakeholders that Ghana’s economic recovery initiatives remain broadly on track. His remarks follow a milestone achievement in which the country reached a staff-level agreement with the International Monetary Fund (IMF) after concluding the first review under the Policy Coordination Instrument (PCI).
Speaking on the progress made so far, Dr. Acheampong emphasized that reaching this agreement highlights the government’s firm commitment to structural economic reforms and fiscal discipline. He noted that the positive evaluation by the IMF staff validates the policy measures deployed to stabilize macroeconomic indicators, lower inflation, and anchor fiscal policy against external headwinds.
Unlike standard IMF financial bailouts, the Policy Coordination Instrument serves as a non-financing policy framework designed to provide technical assistance, monitor performance, and boost market confidence. Dr. Acheampong clarified that passing the first review reinforces domestic policy credibility, sending a strong signal to investors and bilateral partners that Ghana is steadily moving from crisis management to sustainable economic stability.
Looking ahead, the Ministry of Finance plans to leverage the IMF’s endorsement to accelerate key structural reforms across public financial management, revenue mobilization, and debt sustainability. Dr. Acheampong reiterated that maintaining reform momentum will be critical to protecting vulnerable sectors of the economy while establishing a firm foundation for long-term growth.
