Residents along the White Volta River and nearby low-lying areas are being urged to move to higher ground following an alert from the Water Resources Commission (WRC) regarding impending water spillage from the Bagré Dam in Burkina Faso.
In a statement issued on August 4, 2026, the Commission noted that SONABEL, the operators of the dam, reported a water level of 232.93 meters, putting the reservoir at 62.77% capacity as of Tuesday, August 4. Controlled spillage is scheduled to begin once the water level hits 234.00 meters to prevent structural overload and ensure safe operations.
The WRC has strongly advised residents in flood-prone communities to stay alert and follow safety instructions issued by their local Metropolitan, Municipal, and District Assemblies (MMDAs) and emergency services. The Commission confirmed it will keep monitoring the situation closely and share further updates as necessary.
