UDS Retain African University Football Title in Cairo

Ghana’s University for Development Studies (UDS) cemented their place at the summit of collegiate sport after retaining their African university football championship title in Cairo, Egypt. The Tamale-based team defeated Tanzania’s Julius Nyerere University 2–1 in a fiercely contested final. The historic victory marks the second consecutive continental crown for UDS, making them the first team in the history of African university football to successfully defend the title.

​UDS delivered a masterclass throughout the tournament, demonstrating tactical maturity and elite dominance. Their path to the trophy match was punctuated by a stunning 4–0 victory over Egypt’s Delta University in the semi-finals, sending a clear warning to their eventual final opponents. When called upon in the decider, the Ghanaian side showed true grit to overcome a resilient Julius Nyerere University team and seal their back-to-back crown.

​This latest triumph adds another glittering chapter to an extraordinary run for the Northern Region institution. Just months prior, in September 2025, UDS etched their name into global sporting history by becoming the first African team to win the FISU World University Football Championship in Dalian, China. In that dramatic world final, UDS overcame Brazil’s Paulista University 2–1 in extra time, courtesy of a breathless 121st-minute winner.

​By backing up their world championship with another continental trophy, UDS have moved far beyond a single successful generation. The Tamale powerhouses have officially established themselves as a global standard-bearer for university athletics. With back-to-back African titles and a world crown in their trophy cabinet, UDS stand as an unchallenged major force in university football on both the African continent and the international stage.
