Predicted Ghana XI vs Panama: Black Stars Set for World Cup Opener Without Partey

The Black Stars of Ghana

Ghana's 2026 FIFA World Cup campaign begins tonight against Panama in Toronto, and head coach Carlos Queiroz is expected to name a strong attacking side despite the absence of vice-captain Thomas Partey. The experienced midfielder will miss the Group L opener after being denied entry into Canada, forcing the Black Stars to reshuffle their midfield plans.

With Partey unavailable, Auxerre midfielder Elisha Owusu is widely tipped to partner promising youngster Caleb Yirenkyi in the centre of the park. The duo are expected to provide balance and energy as Ghana look to control possession against a disciplined Panama side.

In attack, the Black Stars boast plenty of firepower. Captain Jordan Ayew is expected to lead the line, supported by the pace and creativity of Antoine Semenyo and Ernest Nuamah. Many analysts believe Semenyo could be Ghana's biggest attacking threat after an outstanding club season heading into the tournament.

At the back, goalkeeper Lawrence Ati-Zigi is expected to start behind a defence featuring Marvin Senaya, Jonas Adjetey, Jerome Opoku and Gideon Mensah. Their task will be to contain a Panama side known for its organisation and counter-attacking ability.

Predicted Ghana Starting XI (4-2-3-1)

Lawrence Ati-Zigi; Marvin Senaya, Jonas Adjetey, Jerome Opoku, Gideon Mensah; Elisha Owusu, Caleb Yirenkyi; Ernest Nuamah, Augustine Boakye, Antoine Semenyo; Jordan Ayew.

Ghana enter the match as slight favourites, but Panama are expected to provide a stern test in what could prove a crucial fixture in a group that also contains England and Croatia. A winning start would significantly boost the Black Stars' hopes of reaching the knockout stages.
