A coalition of teacher unions has put its scheduled strike on hold after reaching an agreement to continue discussions with the government regarding salary adjustments for recently promoted staff.
The decision was announced on Monday, August 31, after union representatives met with Education Minister Haruna Iddrisu. The organizations had previously threatened to walk off the job if their grievances were not addressed by the end of the day.
At the heart of the dispute is the delayed placement of newly promoted teachers onto their correct salary grade levels, which has prevented them from receiving their updated pay and benefits.
The union leaders noted that the delay stemmed from a recent requirement by the Controller and Accountant-General’s Department for extra documentation. They maintained that this requirement contradicted a prior commitment from the Ghana Education Service (GES) to roll out automatic promotion upgrades by August.
Following the meeting with the Education Minister, the unions agreed to suspend the industrial action to give both sides time to work through the administrative hurdles and resolve the issue.
